"I wonder if I'm saved?" "I'm not really sure if I would go to Heaven if I were to die today." These are questions and thoughts that many ponder. But, is this real assurance? Should we be satisfied to journey through life with this outlook regarding our salvation?
The Bible reminds us that we can know that we have eternal life (1 John 5:13). In our investigation of a Christian's assurance of his salvation, let us consider:
The revelation of the Spirit
We cannot be truly secure if we trust only our own feelings. Real security comes from the word of God - what we happen to "feel" about it cannot determine this. (Romans 8:16; John 8:32; John 17:17)The blood of the Son
We know that our sins need to be dealt with. They need to be dealt with correctly and scripturally. There is no sin that cannot be covered by the perfect sacrifice of Christ's blood. Sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2), but we are drawn back to Him when we obey the gospel and allow the blood of Jesus to cleanse us from our sins (Romans 5:2).The grace of God
Grace is what we are in need of rather than what we actually deserve. Grace is unmerited favor. In acronym form, grace could be called.. "God's Riches At Christ's Expense." (Romans 5:6). Trying to earn our own salvation is futile. There is no way to do it. We cannot do enough to earn or merit our own salvation. It is here that grace place such a vital role in our salvation.
1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
Romans 5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
