What Is Man?

How can God be mindful of man? How can He so profoundly bless mankind? The very fact that He has done so made the psalmist David exclaim,

"O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!" Psalms 8:9

What am I? Who am I? Why am I? Whether go I?

Even though man continues to be puzzled about himself, the Bible answers all of these questions. Alexander the Great conquered the whole known world of his day, yet he claimed that he could not conquer himself.

Man is a creature of limitations..

He is limited by space.
Man is limited both by the space he occupies and by his own mobility. All things considered, man cannot travel that far - not in the scope of the universe in which he lives.

He is limited by time.
Man has very little time upon this earth. James 1:14 describes man's life as a "vapor."

He is limited by physical laws.
Man yields to the same natural laws that the lower animals do. He is in reality a physically weak and frail being.

He is limited by spiritual and moral laws.
Man is not capable, on his own, of guiding his own spiritual journey successfully. Even though he has the ability to break these laws, in the end man must appeal to a greater source and to these laws designed for him.

Man is also a creature of greatness..

..because he is in God's image.
Since God is a spirit, man also partakes of the divine nature of God. This part of God's nature He has given to man and no other creature.

..because of what he inherits from God.

Man inherits God's intellect. Man has a degree of intellect as the lower animals do, but his instict is more sensitive. It is of a different kind. Man can love, desire, have sorrow and can sympathize.

Man inherits God's will. No lower animals have this. No beast ever said, "I will" or "I won't." No beast ever thought a thought. Only man can believe in a future existence and in a supreme being who is capable of influencing his life.

Man inherit's a soul. Man has something not limited by time, space or physical laws. It is something heavier than a ton, greater than Mt. Everest and as enduring as eternity itself - his immortal soul.

..because of what he is able to accomplish.
Though man has done many great things, his greatest possible accomplishment is that of living a life that pleases his creator.

How does God see man? How does God take notice of man? Many feel that God does not! How sad that many in our world think this. We should remember that God always has us in focus. He can see us as we really are. He wants us to someday live with Him eternally, if we will only obey his will for us.

James 4:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is
your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and
then vanisheth away.
