BAN ON PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION
Houston BynumOn April 18, 2007, the following headline appeared on my homepage of Fox News:
"Supreme Court Upholds Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act"
The article says the following:
The Supreme Court upheld the nationwide ban on a controversial abortion procedure Wednesday, handing abortion opponents the long-awaited victory they expected from a more conservative bench. The 5-4 ruling said the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act that Congress passed and President Bush signed into law in 2003 does not violate a woman's constitutional right to an abortion. The five Justices voting to uphold this nationwide ban on partial birth abortion were Justices Kennedy, Roberts, Alito, Thomas, and Scalia. We thank God for this fine decision which at least limits abortion by outlawing this method.
Over one million abortions are still performed in the United States each year. This ban is the most important pro-life legislation in the past 30 years. It was the first time the court banned a specific method of abortion (about 90% of abortions are still unaffected). This ruling is certainly a step in the right direction. While any taking of innocent human life is morally wrong, to murder by partial birth abortion is especially heinous, tragic, and cruel.
The scriptures certainly uphold the personhood of the pre-born, even before implantation in the womb:Jer. 1:5 - "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you to be a prophet to the nations." I knew YOU! A person.
Ps. 51:5 - David declared: "In sin my mother conceived me". This indicates that David considered himself a person (ME) from the moment of his conception.
Psalm 139:13-16
David described God's care of him even at the earliest stages of his development. "inward parts" (13); "skillfully wrought" (15) - Heb."crocheted a stitch at a time." "my unformed substance" (16) = "undeveloped human embryo." David by inspiration refers to self as "I, me, my." The human person exists before implantation.Ps. 2:7 - God says to the Messiah, Jesus: "You are My Son; Today I have begotten you." The Father-Son relationship begins on the day of begettal. This is a powerful argument establishing human personhood at the point of conception.
Seemingly, it is a long process to change a person's thinking on abortion and to understand (both scientifically and biblically) what the truth is regarding human life. But even if Roe vs. Wade is never overturned, at least this Supreme Court decision to uphold the ban on partial birth abortion is movement in the right direction. We want to help more people see and acknowledge the sanctity of human life and the rights of the pre-born.
