The devil's advocates are at it again! Unbelievers are continuing their efforts to discredit Christianity and to "prove' that the life of Jesus was a fraud. Such nonsense ("Gnostic gospels" to "DaVinci Code") from enemies of the cross is really getting a little old. The latest effort from infidelity comes from Oscar-winner James Cameron, director of "Terminator" and "Titanic." This documentary is clearly Cameron's attempt to "terminate" faith in the resurrection of Jesus and to "sink" the ship of Christianity - if he can.
On March, 4, 2007, at 8 p.m. CST, The Discovery Channel will air "The Lost Tomb of Christ." This documentary by Cameron and his director, Simcha Jacobovici, make a starting claim that Jesus wasn't resurrected and that his burial cave was discovered near Jerusalem in 1980. Sometimes bodies were placed in carved rock tombs, where they decomposed for a year before the bones were placed in an ossuary (small carved casket). This film alleges that 10 ancient ossuaries contain the bones of Jesus and his family.
Twenty-seven years ago, Israeli construction workers were gouging out the foundations for a new building in the industrial park in the Talpiyot, a suburb of Jerusalem. The earth gave way, revealing a 2,000 year old cave with 10 stone caskets. Archeologists were summoned, and the stone caskets were carted away for examination. It took 20 years for experts to decipher the names on the ten tombs. Among them were: Jesua, son of Joseph, Mary, Mary, Mathew, Jofa and Judah, son of Jesua.
When the BBC aired a short documentary previously in 1996 on the same subject, archaeologists derided and challenged the claims as unfounded. Israel's prominent archeologist Professor Amos Kloner was the first archaeologist to examine the site. Kloner said the idea that this is the tomb of Jesus of Nazareth fails to hold up by archaeological standards, but it makes for profitable television. "They just want to get money for it," Kloner said. He maintains that the filmmakers' assertions are false. Kloner does not associate this crypt with Jesus of the New Testament. Joseph, after all, was a humble carpenter who couldn't afford the luxury of a cave crypt for his family. Kloner said, "The names on the caskets are the most common names found among Jews at the time."
Stephen Pfann, a biblical scholar at the University of the Holy Land in Jerusalem, is even unsure that the name of "Jesus" even appears on any of the caskets. He thinks it's more likely the name "Hanun." Pfann said. "But skeptics, in general, would like to see something that pokes holes into the story that so many people hold dear."
In this documentary, Cameron and director Jacobovici claim to have "evidence" through DNA tests, archeological evidence, and Biblical studies that the 10 coffins belong to Jesus and his family. But how could DNA testing possibly confirm whether or not Jesus' body is one of those in these coffins? Where would anyone get his hands on a DNA sample from Jesus that he can compare to this body? Even if he did, how could you ever know the DNA came from Jesus? The Bible does not give us the genetic code of Jesus. And such DNA would be unlike that of any other human, since Jesus was both God and man (Mt. 1:20-25).
Don't you think that political and religious leaders of the first century hunted desperately for Christ's body? If it could have been found, they surely would have found it! These leaders knew that Christianity would end if they could produce the lifeless body of Jesus. People living back then knew where the body of Jesus was placed after the crucifixion. Following His resurrection, that tomb was found empty and people saw, heard, and touched the risen Lord as He appeared in His resurrected physical body to hundreds of witnesses (1 Jn. 1:1; Jn. 20:11-31; Acts 1:1-11; 1 Cor. 15:1-8).
What about Cameron's background? His biographer Marc Shapiro describes Cameron as "only marginally religious," with protestant background, and four failed marriages. "The Lost Tomb of Christ" is obvious heresy based on Cameron's mere assertions and baseless allegations. This new film is just the same nonsense that satan has been using against the church through the centuries. Such pathetic attempts by enemies of the faith should outrage Christians and stir up a "titanic" clash once more between believers and unbelievers.
