150 Years!
Houston Bynum

The LaVergne church of Christ has a great history of setting an example as a faithful and growing New Testament church. We are a living demonstration that the Lord's church both can and should GROW! From 1856 to the present day, how wonderfully God has blessed our work here!

The LaVergne congregation understands that we are not to be mere "keepers of the aquarium," but rather we are to be truly "fishers of men" (Mt. 4:19). Paul said, "I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase" (1 Cor. 3:6, NKJV). God has promised that His word would not return to Him void (empty) (Isa. 55:11). If we sow the seed, God has promised to provide the harvest. But why does this church (or, for that matter, any church) experience God's blessing of GROWTH?

THE CHURCH GROWS BECAUSE WE TRUST THE ONE TRUE GOD.
We do not compromise with human religions, but affirm that there is one and only one true God, whom all should faithfully obey (Acts 17:22-31).

THE CHURCH GROWS BECAUSE WE TRUST THE TRUE SON OF GOD.
We preach Christ crucified (1 Cor. 2:2). We teach that salvation is found only in Jesus' name (Acts 4:12) as He is the Savior of His body, the church (Eph. 5:22-23).

THE CHURCH GROWS BECAUSE WE HAVE FAITH IN THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL.
The power to save is not to be found in popular fads or innovations. The power to save is the gospel (Rom. 1:16)-the living and active word of God (Heb. 4:12). Jesus commanded, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned" (Mk. 16:15-16). We are committed to make disciples by baptizing people of every nation (Mt. 28:18-20).

THE CHURCH GROWS BECAUSE WE LIVE LIVES OF SINCERE DEDICATION TO CHRIST.
We know our lives must be "worthy of the gospel" (Phil. 1:27), and without hypocrisy (Rom. 12:9). Our lives must shine as lights in a world of darkness (Phil. 2:15-16; Mt. 5:13-16). Paul said to, "present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God" (Rom. 12:1-2).

Our first 150 years are now history. What is our future for the next 150 years? In order for our congregation to continue to grow, we must continue in trust, faith, work and dedication. If we will do this, God will continue to provide the increase.

While we can gain knowledge from hindsight, let us have the foresight to look ahead. May every member reach out in planting and watering the seed of God's word (1 Cor. 3:6). As we learn from our past, let us look to our future with great optimism! And may the Lord's church at LaVergne continue to GROW!!
