THE EXISTENCE OF GOD (part 1)
Houston Bynum

A story is told of over a century ago, of an elderly man who was traveling alone in France by train. A much younger man was sitting next to him. The younger man watched as the older man reached into his briefcase, took out a Bible, and began to read it. Striking up a conversation, the younger man asked, "What are you reading?"

The older man replied, "I am reading the 6th chapter of Mark in the New Testament."

"What does it say?" the young man asked.

"It is the story of the miracle of the loaves and fishes. This gospel writer tells us about a vast crowd that had followed Jesus because of the signs He was performing for those who were sick. Jesus then preached to the crowd until it was dark and they were hungry. With only five loaves and two fishes, Jesus fed the entire crowd of five thousand people. After the people had finished eating, they filled twelve baskets of left-overs."

With skepticism, the young man asked, "Do you really believe that?"

"Yes, I do," was the older man's reply.

The young man answered, "I can see that you have been brain-washed by ancient superstitions. That could never happen to me. You see, I am a scientist. Everything that happens in this world can ultimately be accounted for scientifically. The story you have read defies the laws of science and is, therefore, sheer fantasy. Give me facts-provable facts. As a man of science, I can have no faith in miracles. But I cannot expect you to understand that."

At this point, the train began to slow down. "Here is my station," the young man said as he rose from his seat. "It was nice talking to you, mister. I'm sorry I didn't get your name."
The old man handed him his calling card bearing his name: Louis Pasteur, one of the world's greatest scientists.

Clearly, a person can be a true scientist and a believer in God at the same time. A person does not have to "park his brain" (discard reason) in order to accept the testimony of scripture. "And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye may have life in His name" (John 20:30-31, NKJV).
