THE EXISTENCE OF GOD (part 2)
Houston Bynum

The Bible gives the following command: "Test all things; hold fast what is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:21, NKJV). Proof for God's existence comes from two divine sources: general revelation and special revelation.

GENERAL REVELATION (nature) can lead a person to knowledge of the existence of God. David said, "The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard" (Psalm 19:1-2). Without speaking a word, the silent testimony of the created universe is eloquent evidence for God.

"For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God" (Hebrews 3:4; cf. Romans 1:20). The design in the universe (orderliness and predictability of natural phenomena) demands the Designer - the "uncaused first cause."

Dr. Wernher von Braun, former deputy administrator of NASA, once said, "The grandeur of the cosmos serves only to confirm my belief in the certainty of a Creator. Anything as well ordered and perfectly created as our earth and universe must have a Maker, a Master Designer. Anything so orderly, so perfect, so precisely balanced, so majestic as this creation can only be the product of a Divine IdeaThere must be a maker; there can be no other way."

SPECIAL REVELATION (the Bible) can lead a person to further knowledge of God, the proof of the deity of Jesus, and His requirements for man's salvation. "[A]s His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue[K]nowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit" (2 Pet. 1:3, 20-21). The miracles of Jesus are recorded as proof of His divinity, leading to faithful obedience to receive salvation (John 20:30-31). Requirements for gospel obedience include the transformation of the new birth (the penitent believer is baptized into Christ) and living faithfully (John 3:1-8; Mark 16:15-16; Revelation 2:10).

Therefore, from general revelation and special revelation, we can KNOW that God exists, that the Bible is His Word, that Jesus is the Son of God, and that faithful obedience to the Lord is required for man's salvation.
