In the 1960's I remember seeing Stanley Kubrick's movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey. This epic on space travel and futuristic technology pictured a time some four decades away. I was amazed at such marvels of space stations, talking computers, and videophones that Stanley Kubrick envisioned for the not too distant future.
How many of Kubrick's "predictions" are now a reality? NASA continues constructing a space station. Computers are commonplace. Cell phones are everywhere.Tremendous technological advancements have occurred in the last four decades. Gadgets we thought we might never afford are within the financial reach of most everyone. Such technology has also provided new ways to spread the gospel as well. For years preachers have preached the gospel by using the printed page, charts, flannel boards, overhead projectors, cassettes, radio, and television. Additionally, preachers can now preach the gospel by using VHS's, DVD's, emails, websites, and PowerPoint projectors. We can use technology scripturally as an expedient in spreading the gospel.
"The more things change, the more things remain the same." Whatever changes this old world may see (Ecclesiastes 1:9), there are "eternal verities" (everlasting principles of truth) upon which we can depend.
GOD DOES NOT CHANGE Part of the nature of God is his immutability (unchanging nature). "For I am the Lord, I do not change;"(Malachi 3:6, NKJV).
GOD'S WORD DOES NOT CHANGE "Forever, O Lord, your word is settled (i.e., stands firm) in heaven" (Psalm 119:89). The Bible still teaches just exactly what it did thousands of years ago. Truth is not changed by the knower. "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32). God has anticipated the needs of every century.
JESUS CHRIST DOES NOT CHANGE "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8). We can depend completely upon our Lord and His provision for saving our souls.
HUMANKIND DOES NOT CHANGE We are still subject to weakness and temptation. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). The universal antidote to sin is the application of the gospel to the human heart (Romans 1:16; Acts 2:38). The church is the product of the wisdom of God in His eternal purpose (Ephesians 3:10-11, 21). God intends for the church to be "the pillar and ground of the truth" (1 Timothy 3:15). As long as this world stands, our Lord will continue with us in the preaching of the gospel (Matthew 28:18-20). God's Word is perpetually relevant in meeting the spiritual needs of humanity through the completion of the Christian age. No circumstances can arise which have not been contemplated by Divine Wisdom.
"Time is filled with swift transition- Naught of earth unmoved can stand-
Build your hopes on things eternal, Hold to God's unchanging hand" (Jennie Wilson, 1904).
