PRAYER POWER
Houston Bynum

Paul said, "I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding" (1 Corinthians 14:15b, NKJV). When Christians assemble for worship, prayers are led. When Christians are in their homes, prayers are said. When our church leaders meet and make decisions, they pray. We pray in our Bible classes and in our visitation groups. We pray with those who are sick, shut-in, or in sorrow. Publicly and privately we have the supreme privilege of engaging in the activity of prayer.

Our Lord was frequent in prayer and taught his disciples to pray (Matthew 6:5-13). Our access to the throne of God is through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Having a full, meaningful prayer life is not accidental. Like any worthwhile endeavor, it requires planning and organization. Consider these suggestions for exercising our "prayer power" more fully:

WHY NOT GET A NOTEBOOK AND DEVELOP A PRAYER LIST? Your list can include people by name, church programs, and special needs. So often we may forget; making a list helps us remember.

WHY NOT ORGANIZE YOUR PRAYER LIST BY CATEGORIES? While you may offer thanks at meals, pray at bedtime, and offer special prayers as needs arise, consider the value of setting aside a special time each day to pray for specific lists of names and activities.

WHY NOT USE A MEMORY DEVICE (or mnemonic) TO SUGGEST SOME PRAYER CATEGORIES? I have read of a couple of memory devices:
For example, you might use the first letter of each day of the week to suggest a corresponding subject of prayer for that day:

Sunday - Saints. Pray for fellow Christians, elders, deacons, preachers, the local congregation, and the church worldwide.
Monday - Missionaries. Pray for our missionaries by name, for local and world evangelism, and for the lost by name.
Tuesday - Teachers. Pray for our Bible class teachers, our coordinators, our students, and our education ministry.
Wednesday - Washington. Pray for local, state, national, and international leaders. Pray that peace may prevail so that the gospel can be more easily spread.
Thursday - Thanksgiving. Pray with praise for God, thanking him for blessing us materially and spiritually. "Count your blessings, name them one by one" (Johnson Oatman, Jr.).
Friday - Family. Pray for your family, relatives and other friends by name. Pray for the conversion of any who are lost and the restoration of any who are fallen.
Saturday - Sick and shut-in. Pray for those who are confined, who are ill, who are elderly, who suffer physically.

Or you might consider the prayer habits of a nurse. As she was so accustomed to working with her hands, she used her fingers to suggest people for whom to pray:

Thumb (nearest to her) - pray for those near and dear, relatives and close friends.
Index finger (pointing) - pray for those who manage, direct, and supervise.
Third finger (tallest) - pray for those in high positions of leadership and government.
Fourth finger (weakest) - pray for those in illness, disappointment, or sorrow.
Little finger (smallest) - pray for your own needs last in humility and meekness.

Jesus said, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened" (Matthew 7:7-8).
