SPRING IN BLOOM

Houston Bynum

"While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease" (Genesis 8:22, NASB). God's promise to Noah included this cycle of the seasons.

In the season of spring, God seems the most active in nature with his paintbrush and multicolored palate. We can see azalea, forsythia, wisteria, and dogwood are blooming out in brilliant shades of red, pink, white, yellow, and purple.

The fairway in Augusta, GA, is not the only location with breathtaking vistas of spring flowers. Just drive along our Tennessee roads and marvel at the azalea in red, pink and white and the wisteria hanging from the trees like lilac-colored pearls. We even have streets named for such magnificent spring flowers.

Jesus said, "Observe the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these" Matthew 6:28-29). Jesus advises us to learn a lesson from flowers about the uselessness of anxiety. Do we trust in God to take care of our basic needs? Since He takes care of birds and flowers (lesser creatures), He will take care of us (His greater creation).

Not only can we learn of God's care for us from nature, but we can also learn about some of His characteristics. Paul wrote, "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse" (Romans 1:20). Nature gives evidence of God's power and divine nature.

Truly, "The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard" (Psalm 19:1-3).

More eloquent than mere words is the voice of creation which says, "There is a God, and He cares for you and me."
