Autumn
Houston Bynum

"While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease" (Genesis 8:22, NKJV).

Unique and individual beauties characterize each of the four seasons. Autumn has its own distinct feeling and character.

Football season. Back to school. Crisp, frosty mornings. A cozy fireplace. A reminder of God's wonderful harvest gifts at Thanksgiving. Leaves colored yellow, orange, red, and bronze. The Great Designer of the universe displays His color palate in the forest for man to see His artistry. The harvest moon lights up the clear autumn sky. Truly, "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork" (Psalm 19:1).

Let's use this beautiful autumn season as a time to reflect. Why not gain a new and lasting perspective? Take a walk down the lane of memory. Consider what and where and why. Think about who you are and Whose you are. Such a visit can prompt us to evaluate the way we were living and establish the way we want to become.

This, of course, implies change-another reason autumn seems to encourage reflection. During these months, the foliage changes; weather changes; time changes; birds migrate southward; animals store up food; others hibernate. With divinely given instinct, the creatures know just what their Creator intends for them to do.

"But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you; and the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; and the fish of the sea will explain to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this, in whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind?" (Job 12:7-10).

As God takes us from summer to autumn, allow His word to write on the tablet of your heart. As you allow His will to renew and shape your life, make whatever changes are necessary. He patiently waits for your change to begin.

If you are not a Christian, why not confess your faith in Christ, repent of sins, and be baptized today? (Acts 2:38). If you are a fallen away Christian, why not come back home and be restored to God's family today? (Luke 15:11-32).

Reflect on these facts: God loves you; we love you; Jesus died for your salvation; life is uncertain; eternity is forever. In this season of change, why not reflect on any spiritual changes you need to make and take action today.

You'll be glad you did-both now and in eternity!
