Some years ago while speaking on the phone to someone who provided a maintenance service, he happened to notice that I seemed a little out of breath. I told him I had been working outside and had some allergies and a little asthma. He related that he too had a problem with asthma and had tried a new product that was quite effective. His words were, "Next to the Lord Jesus Christ, this new medicine has made the biggest difference in my life." He went on to relate how the medicine had remarkably benefited his respiratory condition. I thanked him for his concern and his advice.
Later reflecting on this conversation, it intrigued me how he was able to take a "business" call and introduce a spiritual subject in the process. He had found a medicine that tremendously helped his asthma. He had also shared that his relationship to the Lord was his number one priority. Jesus said, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (Matthew 6:33, NKJV). More than anything else, this man regarded his relationship with Jesus as making the greatest difference in his life.
Was he using this approach to open up a discussion with people regarding their need for the Savior? Possibly. Does he try to find a way to mention the Lord in every conversation? Well, he did with me.
I once heard T. Pierce Brown speaking on his approach to personal evangelism. (In sales, this would be called "How to Get Your Foot in the Door"). While putting gas in his car, T. Pierce would say to a person standing nearby, "Isn't this a beautiful day the Lord has given us!" Usually the person would respond in some fashion, perhaps replying, "Yes, He surely has." With such a positive response as this, one might further inquire about that person's relationship to God and His word and ask, "Would you like to know more about God and His word? We could look at God's word together and talk." By using the approach of just mentioning the Lord in our conversations, it is possible to set up Bible studies and share the "good news" with others.
From the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:46-49), it is clear that our Lord desires that his followers share the gospel with others. Can YOU look for ways in your everyday conversation to introduce the Lord to others? Has the good news of Jesus made the greatest difference in YOUR life? Pass it on!
